I posted this a while back, but here it is again...

Kevin K. of Yaesu provided some great info about their new FT-51R HT, at the
recent meeting. He also described some undocumented features. For
those who want a hardcopy of this, here it is.
YAESU FT-51R Soft-Modifications - undocumented: February 1995
The new FT-51R utilizes software to control the various deeper level
functions instead of some traditional pots.
To access this undocumented menu:
1. Turn on radio, and select band you want to modify.
2. Turn off the radio.
3. Simultaneously press the 2 VOLUME keys and the CALL buttons while
powering on.
4. You're now in the soft-mods menu.
5. You'll now see the following menu choices while turning the DIAL
knob:
BAND 1 (top of menu)
IF NO 0
S-FULL84
S-1 19
SQL TH64
SQL TI4E
MOD L 25
MOD H 27
The only soft-mod I'm familiar with so far, is to change the deviation
setting for the mike.
Turn the dial until you see MOD L 25:
1. Press the FUNCTION key down for 1/2 sec. until F flashes.
2. Press the /\MHz or \/MHz to change the numerical value.
3. Press the FUNCTION key again to save this change.
4. Do the same for MOD H 27.
5. Power off.
I'm not sure exactly what the numerical values mean, so experimenting
is in order.
I'm also unclear as to what the other menu items are. I believe they
have to do with squelch settings, i.e., threshold.
I've also been told that the software can be controlled by an external
computer, by accessing the handshake via simultaneously pressing 2 and
9, and powering on (remember MH-29, model # of the LCD mike). I don't
know what connector or software is needed.
Please send any info you have on these soft-mods.
